Okay, you have your website all designed and it looks\nphenomenal. So you want your designer to flip the switch and put it live. Hmmm,\nlet\u2019s think about that for a second.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
First, let\u2019s consider the day of the week. I like to launch\na new website on Fridays \u2013 usually in the morning \u2013 so that we have the entire\nweekend to \u201cclean up\u201d anything that isn\u2019t working quite right. Your designer\nmay feel differently. But, it\u2019s not always as easy as just uploading some files\nand walking away. If you\u2019re not over-writing all the existing files that are\ncurrently on the website, they need to be addressed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Here\u2019s how we do it. If the client wants a copy of his old\nwebsite, we\u2019ll download the site for him. Then we upload all our new files \u2013\nincluding the robot.txt file, and htaccess file, if needed, etc. We check the\nwebsite to make sure everything is displaying properly. Some servers are \u201ccase\nsensitive\u201d so a photo named Photo.jpg that was entered as photo.jpg on the page\ncould show as a broken graphic. Typically, we avoid this problem by making sure\nthat we use case sensitivity when creating the website, but things can still go\nwrong.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
If all looks well, we will need to check the server for \u201corphaned\u201d\npages \u2013 old pages that were not replaced and remove them. (The 301 redirects\nand robot.txt file will address the issue to the search engines so there\u2019s no\nneed to leave them \u2013 see part 4 of this article for more info.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Then we create an xml sitemap for the website and upload it\nto the server. With the xml sitemap in place, we can now add the site to our\nGoogle webmaster account and submit that sitemap. This will help Google update\nits datacenters a bit more quickly. (Google will also ask us to verify\nownership of the website by uploading at Google validation file.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n
We should test the forms to make sure that the you receive\nthe inquiries \u2013 if that goes well, then the new website is officially launched\nand ready to be promoted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
